Working with learning disabilities and mixed ability groups...

Over the past two years I have developed a strong relationship with Learning disability/mixed ability groups as a drama facilitator. I now see an opportunity to offer bushcraft sessions for this group and local community groups. I would like to offer a safe space to relax around a campfire and build  strong relationships whilst being active for example, nature woodland walks and cooking bread on sticks over the campfire.

I aim to choose appropriate simple activities to activate individuals’ senses. simply cooking around the fire as well as a fire kettle with lots of warm drinks made from the woodland such as Nettle tea, and Douglas fur teas. Foraging is a good way to get active in the fresh air and learn the smells taste and names of Plants and Trees, and have fun whilst connecting with nature and each other.

Utilising learnt Pathways to access individuals and the collective imagination via stories and interview techniques as well as. Along with plenty of opportunities for free expression and games. I would like to lead singing around the campfire.

Running alongside all these activities I will be focusing and finding new ways to strengthen, learn and develop people’s relationship with nature and thereby with themselves. For example, Simple digging for water (gypsy well) and moving soil connects one with the earth, the smells and texture of earth. Also, simple foraging for sticks helps them connect with the Plants and trees. Also, simple awareness exercises connect one with the birds by imitation whistling and utilising the voice to sound pitch to mimic and connect with the sounds of nature.
